Dry eyes are not an uncommon problem, one in three of us might have to deal with this at some stage. The causes are many and a medical assessment is often necessary to uncover the underlying reason for this condition. Diet and nutrition aren’t often in the discussion so I was pleasantly surprised when an ophthalmologist, during the course of his lengthy dissertation presented at a recent dinner meeting sponsored by a pharmaceutical company, whose agenda is often the promotion of their products, elaborated on all the nutrients, the deficiencies of which might exacerbate this condition. If we lack vitamins A, C, D, iron, calcium or omega-3 fatty acids dry eyes can be the result so for those who have tried a range of lubricating drops without any relief testing for and correcting any deficiencies of these nutrients might lead to gratifyingly positive results.
